Addition Unit Test Information

Posted: March 12, 2013

Grade one will be having a unit test on addition this Thursday and Friday.  This is a fairly large test and will be broken into two parts.  Students will be demonstrating applying strategies learned for efficient addition.  Making 10 and doubles will certainly be on the test.  Ask your child about these strategies.  See if they can apply them to these two story problems below.  Avoid telling them how to answer.  Remember, avoid helping them answer the questions and see what they can teach you first!  Guide your child if you see them struggling. Jenny got a surprise in her lunch box today.  Her dad had packed her some jelly beans.  8 of the jelly beans were red and the rest were blue.  All together Jenny got 13 jelly beans.  How many were blue? (Making 10 is a great strategy for this question) Sam had a hockey tournament this weekend.  In his first game he scored 3 goals and in his second game he scored 4.  How many goals did Sam score all together? (Doubles + 1 is a great strategy for this question)
