Grade 1B had a FABLOUS first week back at school!!!  We learned this week that we are all rockstars!  We're all rockstars because each of us has a special talent and we're going to work really hard this year to find it and improve it!  Check our Wall of Fame, I mean, webpage often where you'll see our work showcased!Mrs. Furlotte and the First Grade Rockstars

I'd like to welcome all my new students to first grade!  I hope you all got your postcard last week!  I can't wait to see you all on Tuesday morning.  I'll meet you on the playground and then we'll head in and find our seats, where you'll find something fun and mysterious waiting for you!  See you Tuesday, Ms. Furlotte

Can you believe it?  Another school year is winding down.  I will be placing our LAST book order of the year on Thursday, May 23.  This will ensure there's plenty of time for it to arrive before school ends.  What a great opportunity to stock up your child's library for the summer.   As always, I'd like to thank you for supporting literacy in our classrooms!  A percentage of the money you spend comes back to our classroom via books and learning materials! Book club flyers will be coming home with your child on Thursday, May 16.  =)

1B is currently working on a science unit about seeds.  We're looking for lots of different kinds of seeds.  If you're garderning or if you're eating some food this week that has seeds in it, would you please send some in?  We'd appreciate it if you could label the seeds so that we know what they are.  =) IMPORTANT:  Due to allergies, please don't send in anything from the peanut or nut family. Thanks for your help, The kids of 1B

Just a little reminder that since we're approaching the end of the school year, all book orders for May need to be in by tomorrow so that we may get June's order out with enough time for it to come in before school ends.  Thank you for supporting Literacy in our classroom!

Just a note to parents that the SPCA can be a very loud place.  You may want to consider sending a pair of soft ear plugs with your child if they have trouble with loud noises.  This is just a suggestion and is NOT mandatory.
Students will be bringing home a permission slip today to go to the SPCA on Tuesday, April 30.  At the SPCA we will be presenting our cheque from the money raised during the "Cookies For Critters" bake sale.  The students will also get to have a tour of the SPCA and visit with the animals.  Students will also get a little session on how to approach animals safely. NOTE:  The SPCA can be a very loud place.  You may want to consider getting your child some soft ear plugs if they're bothered by loud noises.

A big thank you goes out to the parents and students who participated in the student led conferences last week!  I hope you enjoyed getting a glimpse into your child's day at school.  I also hope you got a better understanding of the strategies your child is learning to use to in both Math and Literacy.
Our class will be visiting the book fair tomorrow at 8:45.  Books usually start at a cost of $6.00.  If you'd like your child to be able to purchase a book(s), please send in their money in an envelope or baggie with their name on it.   Remember, by purchasing books through book fair and book orders, you're directly supporting our school and our classrooms.  Scholastic gives back a percentage of sales to the schools in the way of supplies and books.

Grade one will be having a unit test on addition this Thursday and Friday.  This is a fairly large test and will be broken into two parts.  Students will be demonstrating applying strategies learned for efficient addition.  Making 10 and doubles will certainly be on the test.  Ask your child about these strategies.  See if they can apply them to these two story problems below.  Avoid telling them how to answer.  Remember, avoid helping them answer the questions and see what they can teach you first!  Guide your child if you see them struggling. Jenny got a surprise in her lunch box today.  Her dad had packed her some jelly beans.  8 of the jelly beans were red and the rest were blue.  All together Jenny got 13 jelly beans.  How many were blue? (Making 10 is a great strategy for this question) Sam had a hockey tournament this weekend.  In his first game he scored 3 goals and in his second game he scored 4.  How many goals did Sam score all together? (Doubles + 1 is a great strategy for this question)

The students of 1B have brainstormed and voted and have decided that they'd like their class's Easter Basket theme to be "Movies".  We're asking families to purchase children's DVD's or movie themed things for our basket.  Ms. Furlotte will be purchasing a hot air popcorn popper because no movie night is complete without popcorn!  Some other ideas our students have come up with for the basket are treats or movie money.   Just a reminder that the bulk of money raised from this year's Easter Basket auction will go towards the purchase of a wheel chair accessible swing so that ALL students can enjoy our playground! Please have all contributions sent in by the end of next week (March 22). Thanks for your support!

Just a friendly reminder to parents that baking supplies requested last week need to be in by tomorrow.  Students will be baking cookies for our SPCA fundraiser bake sale on Wednesday!  If you're able to volunteer to help bake cookies and have not already sent in a slip, please send a note in with your child expressing interest.  We're still looking for volunteers.
