Doubles plus one game

NOTE:  This game uses the doubles plus one more strategy.  The questions go beyond 6+6, so this might be a game you want to play with your child, instead of having them play independently.  You could write a list of the doubles number sentences up to 10 + 10 for them.  Try to include your child in creating the list.  Ask them questions about why they think their idea is the answer.  Then they can use this as their "cheat sheet" for the game.

Doubles Song

Just wanting to let parents know that you'll notice a change on your childs' basic facts test.  While our primary focus has been on adding and subtracting one and two, you'll now see questions on doubles and doubles plus one (ex:  5+5=___,   5+___=10,   4+5=___,   4+___=9).  We've practiced this a great deal in the last week and will continue it as it's a very important strategy for adding and subtracting.  Our goal in Math is always become more efficient and this is just another tool to move towards that.  You'll see that earlier this week, I added two weblinks on working with doubles.  These are fun practice games to help your child with doubles.  I'll be adding some more links for you to use at home.   Here are some games to try at home:  Using a deck of playing cards, take out all the ace's, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6's.  Play a memory game with them.  When your child matches a pair of doubles have them tell you the answer when they're added together in order for them to be able to keep the card.  You could also put this same twist on a game of go fish! Thank you for your support!

Doubles Matching Game

We're working on learning our doubles.  This is a great matching game to help your child become automatic when reciting their doubles.

Students are still working on adding and subtracting 1 and 2, to show understanding of 1 and 2 more and 1 and 2 less.  Please continue to practice these facts at home.  You can check out the weblink on my teacher home page for a great website.
This week in art we finished up our polar bear sculptures from last week with paint.  The students of 1B are excellent artists and really enjoyed working with different mediums in art over the past two weeks.  They're very detail oriented and put a lot of thought and effort into their art projects...
