Kindergarten and Grade One

Posted: March 12, 2013

Grade one will be having a unit test on addition this Thursday and Friday.  This is a fairly large test and will be broken into two parts.  Students will be demonstrating applying strategies learned for efficient addition.  Making 10 and doubles will certainly be on the test.  Ask your child about these strategies.  See if they can apply them to these two story problems below.  Avoid telling them how to answer.  Remember, avoid helping them answer the questions and see what they can teach you first!  Guide your child if you see them struggling. Jenny got a surprise in her lunch box today.  Her dad had packed her some jelly beans.  8 of the jelly beans were red and the rest were blue.  All together Jenny got 13 jelly beans.  How many were blue? (Making 10 is a great strategy for this question) Sam had a hockey tournament this weekend.  In his first game he scored 3 goals and in his second game he scored 4.  How many goals did Sam score all together? (Doubles + 1 is a great strategy for this question)

The students of 1B have brainstormed and voted and have decided that they'd like their class's Easter Basket theme to be "Movies".  We're asking families to purchase children's DVD's or movie themed things for our basket.  Ms. Furlotte will be purchasing a hot air popcorn popper because no movie night is complete without popcorn!  Some other ideas our students have come up with for the basket are treats or movie money.   Just a reminder that the bulk of money raised from this year's Easter Basket auction will go towards the purchase of a wheel chair accessible swing so that ALL students can enjoy our playground! Please have all contributions sent in by the end of next week (March 22). Thanks for your support!

In this short video clip Marley-Rae explains how she can make 8 + 5 easier to work with!

Posted: February 15, 2013

We've been busy in grade one working on making numbers more "friendly".  In this photo Miranda shows how she took 8 + 5 and made it easier to work with by changing the 8 into a 10.  As you can see, she drew the 8 and the 5.  She circled 2 from the 5 and moved it over to the 8 to make 10, then she...

Just a friendly reminder to parents that baking supplies requested last week need to be in by tomorrow.  Students will be baking cookies for our SPCA fundraiser bake sale on Wednesday!  If you're able to volunteer to help bake cookies and have not already sent in a slip, please send a note in with your child expressing interest.  We're still looking for volunteers.

Last week we learned about doubles and how doubles can help us add different numbers.  This week we're working on ways to make 10.  Students were given materials and asked to find all the ways to add two numbers to make 10.  It didn't take long before the kids started realizing there had to be an...
